Coinciding with the 10th anniversary of "Art School Musical", Edward Lam has designated 2024-2025 as "The Year of Liang Zhu." Ten years later, in the AI generation, we ask again, "What is art?"

什麼是舞台?What is Stage?

當香港劇場發展的可能性正在醞釀之際,西九文化區也回應舞台美學的命題,邀請非常林奕華聯合舉辦「什麼是舞台」舞台美學系列。透過講座、演出放映和大師工作坊,大眾可以以一個新的切入點認識劇場,從觀看歐洲劇場再延伸對香港劇場未來的想像。

As the development of theater in Hong Kong is brewing, the West Kowloon Cultural District is responding to stage aesthetics by inviting the Edward Lam Dance Theater to co-host the "What is Stage" series. Through lectures, performance screenings, and master workshops, the public can gain a new perspective on theater, extending their understanding of European theater to envision the future of theater in Hong Kong.

Who is
Eward Lam?

Edward Lam founded Zuni Icosahedron with friends in the early 1980s and established Edward Lam Dance Theatre, where he serves as the artistic director, during his residence in London (1989– 1995).

Since returning to Hong Kong in 1995, he has devoted himself to theatre and directed more than 70 original productions. Lam was awarded Best Director at Shanghai theatre festival Modern Drama Valley’s One Drama Awards on several occasions, including for Men and Women, War and Peace (2010), The Doppelgänger (2012), and What is Sex? (2017), and was named Artist of the Year (Theatre) by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council in 2017.

A firm believer in education, Lam has given lectures at The University of Hong Kong, the Academy of Film at Hong Kong Baptist University, and The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.

 

In 2015, he launched the first edition of ELDT On Screen, a cinematic showcase of four of his adaptations of literary classics. He has also published books of collected essays, including Waiting for Hong Kong, The Meaning of Entertainment, Evil But Glamorous, My TV Dinner Years, and Leading Ladies in the Mandarin Cinema. In 2016, Taiwanese journal Performing Arts Review published Who is Afraid of Edward Lam, Hsu Yen-mei’s analysis of Lam’s stage productions from 2006 to 2015.

During the pandemic, every theatre worker was concerned about how to fill more seats. Edward Lam sought to change his previous style and aimed to incorporate various types of theatre, including 14 Variations on the Theme of Yi Yi, 14 Lullabies for Ting Ting (Installation Version), NJ's Journey to Atami, and Hard Times.

誰是林奕華?

林奕華於1980年代初與朋友創立了「進念二十面體」,並在他於倫敦居住期間(1989年至1995年)成立了「非常林奕華劇團」,擔任藝術總監。

自1995年返回香港以來,他全心投入戲劇,執導了70多部原創作品。林奕華曾多次在上海戲劇節的《上海-靜安現代戲劇谷》獲得最佳導演獎,包括《男人與女人之戰爭與和平》(2010年)、《紅娘的異想世界之在西廂》(2012年)和《紅樓夢》(2017年),並於2017年獲香港藝術發展局,頒發年度藝術家(戲劇)獎。

林奕華堅信教育的重要性,因此他仍在香港大學、香港浸會大學電影學院及香港演藝學院講授課程,盼望繼續作育英才。

2015年,他推出了ELDT On Screen的首次展映,這是一個展示他曾演出過的四部文學經典改編作品的電影展。他還出版了多本散文集,包括《等待香港》、《娛樂的意義》、《惡之華麗》。2016年,台灣期刊《表演藝術評論》發表了許妍梅的分析文章《Who's Afraid of 林奕華:在劇場,與 禁忌玩遊戲》。

在疫情大流行期間,每位戲劇工作者都擔心如何吸引觀眾關注和購買戲劇作品。林奕華希望改變他以往的風格,並旨在融入各種類型的戲劇,包括《一個人的一一:洋洋的一封信》、《兩個人的一一:婷婷的14首搖籃曲(裝置版)》、《NJ的熱海之旅》和《艱辛歲月》。

What is the future of theatre? What is the future of Chinese theatre?

Since its founding in 1991, Edward Lam Dance Theatre (ELDT) has connected, engaged and inspired audiences in Chinese communities across cities with over 70 original theatre pieces and ‘ELDT on screen’. Combing through the substantial development and alienation of modern values, the works delve into the Zeitgeist and depicts modern predicaments, offering multi-dimensional, multi-perspective, and multi-media journeys for audience to experience, freely associate and contemplate. 

From youth theatre to adapting literature, from the “Four Great Classics” series to the “Yi Yi Trilogy”, ELDT has been constantly interrogating culture with dialectic, liberating minds through theatre, while exploring the future of Chinese theatre. 

Future stems from an open mind.

現代人需要甚麼戲劇?華人需要甚麼劇場?城市需要甚麼遊戲?
自一九九一年創團,非常林奕華以超過七十部原創劇場作品和「舞台映画」,與大中華的觀眾群連結、對話和沉思。

作品無一不從時代精神(Zeitgeist)出發,爬梳現代價值觀的劇變與異化對人的困局,以多維度、多視點、多媒體的形式刺激觀眾聯想,反觀慾望,尋找自我。從青年劇場到名著改編,從《四大名著》到《一一三部曲》,每部均以「為什麼」詰問文化,以「為什麼不」打開想像,開拓現代華文戲劇的可能性。
